Rock Solid! What Your Child Learned in Church Today (Feb 1)
ATTENTION: Parents & Volunteers - Meeting This Wednesday Night at 6:30 p.m. Dinner at 6:00 p.m.
TODAY'S PRE-K LESSON - Unit: Yippee Ti Yi Yo - Jesus can do anything!
Bible Lesson: Jesus Heals the Centurion's Servant (Matthew 8:5-13)
Main Point: Jesus can do anything! I can ask Him for help!
Bible Verse: "Pray about everything. Tell God what you need..." Philippians 4:6
TODAY'S ELEMENTARY LESSON (KG through 4th grades)
Unit: To the Depths: An In-Depth Study of James
Bible Lesson: Today's lesson was on listening to and doing what the Bible says - King Josiah and Book of God's Law (2 Kings 22 & 23)
Main Point: I will listen and do what the Bible says!
Memory Verse: "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right." 2 Timothy 3:16
Bible Readings at Home: Please read through the Book of James with your child through the months of January and February. James is so rich with messages from God on how to live the Christian Life.
Children learned that to have the best life possible, we must read the Bible and then DO what it says. The Bible is God's Word. God gave it to us so that we will know what He wants us to do. In the Bible, God gives us instructions and rules to live by. It also tells us how we should treat other people. But this is only the tip of the iceburg. The Bible is so full of God's wisdom and it also tells us about God's character. The Bible is still relevant for us today.
TRAINING UP A CHILD HOMEWORK:
1. Help your child memorize 2 Timothy 3:16 and be able to recite it to me next Sunday.
2. Keep reading through the Book of James with your child for the months of January and February.

A Frazzled Woman's Not To Do List
My new years resolutions this year were, in essence, to help me reprioritize that which was important, eliminate those things that were not, and delegate those things that others could do. How am I doing in maintaining those resolutions? Well, not so good. Frankly, I've not adhered to any of them like I should. In fact, I was soooo overbooked, overworked, and overtasked that I totally collapsed last Saturday and could not hardly get out of bed. The exhaustion was so much that I couldn't even attend Michael's basketball games last Saturday. I missed seeing him play and he started, too. I love to watch my kids play basketball so this was a big deal for me to miss. This week hasn't been any better. By Wednesday night, I was beyond the point of exhaustion. I couldn't even fall asleep! That wasn't the way I planned to start my year off! That's not the way God intended any of us to be, either! That's NOT the way my family needs me to be! All I could keep thinking was Jesus' words in Matthew 11:28 "...Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." I'd repeat them over and over, desparately praying for relief! I came to the realization this week that I absolutely cannot keep going at the speed that I am. God showed me that this was not his intention for me, or any of us. Plus, I'm getting older and don't have the energy to keep up like I used too! I don't have a choice, I must make a change! Pleas forgive me if I sound a little whiney. I get that way when I'm sick and tired:-)
Okay, so I must confess. A lot of this is my own fault. I'm a natural type A personality and it's hard for me not to be so involved. So, as I'm sitting home today with a sick little boy, I paused to really analyze my life and why I can't seem to slow down. I realize that I'm still saying yes to things I should say no to, my schedule is still overbooked, I'm still not spending the time with family and friends like I should. And I've not delegated or eliminated things as much as is needed. Although I feel as though I've not strictly adhered to my resolutions. However, I must pare down for my own health, for the sake of my family, friends, the children's ministry, and my students at school! Otherwise, I'm no good to anyone! How about you? Have you been able to stick to your resolutions? Or are you like me, still struggling with issues you thought you'd put to rest?
So, in an effort to re-establish my resolutions, I'm taking a little pressure off myself. Instead of a "To Do" list that will make me feel crummy, because I never accomplish all that is on it, I've come up with a "NOT" To Do List!
1. I will not attempt to do everything. It's impossible anyway.
2. I will not try to be Supermom!
3. If the house is a mess, that's ok. It's our mess and we can live with it - maybe. Oh, I don't know about this one. I don't think I can live with it after all.
4. I will not feel guilty if I tell someone no, especially if it requires more work on my part than theirs - which is usually the case. Saying no to things, even good things, means a BIGGER YES to those things that are MOST IMPORTANT! So, if you suggest something be willing to be the person to carry it out. I'm booked!
5. I will not allow ANYTHING to interfere with special times with my family, especially around holidays.
6. I will not overbook my schedule - time with my family and my children's activities are most important therefore they will take precedence.
7. I will not worry about undone tasks - things don't have to be perfect! They usually never are anyway!
8. I don't have to be SUPERMULTITASKER or SUPERORGANIZED!
9. I will not pressure myself to make EVERYONE HAPPY! There will always be someone who isn't happy with something I've said or done anyway, even if I do try to please everyone.
10. I don't have to cook a full course dinner every night. Fishsticks, baked french fries, and baked beans do count as as a nutritious meal! Does cereal count, too?
Here's your assignment. Come up with your own "Not to Do" list. Then kick back and have a cup of coffee. That's next on my agenda...then it's a shower, off to the doctor with little Michael, then back home to clean house! A mother's job never ends:-)
Here's a couple of great resources for those of us who are frazzled and exhausted by the responsibilities of our lives. These are awesome, ladies!

What your Child Learned in Church Today, Jan 25
TODAY'S PRE-K LESSON - Unit: Yippee Ti Yi Yo - Jesus can do anything!
Bible Lesson: Jesus raises His friend Lazarus (John 11:1-44)
Main Point: Jesus can do anything! He always cares for me!
Bible Verse: "He cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7b
TODAY'S ELEMENTARY LESSON (KG through 4th grades)
Unit: To the Depths: An In-Depth Study of James
Bible Lesson: Today's lesson was on controlling the tongue. We explored a good example of how to use our words to be helpful - Jethro's Wise Words to Moses (Exodus 18).
Main Point: I will use my words to help others!
Memory Verse: "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, Oh Lord, my rock and my redeemer." Psalm 19:14
Bible Readings at Home: Please read through the Book of James with your child through the months of January and February. James is so rich with messages from God on how to live the Christian Life. The primary passages that correspond to today's lesson is James 3:1-12. Controlling the tongue is a difficult thing. Our words should be used to help others, like Jethro's wise words to Moses. Our words should encourage, build up, and show loving correction. Even when others say hurtful things to us or about us, we are not to use our words to retaliate. WE can not control what others may say. But, we can control what we say. GOD WANTS US TO USE OUR WORDS TO HELP OTHERS! Like my Mama used to say, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!" But Psalm 19:14 takes this one step further. Not only are our words to be pleasing to God, but our THOUGHTS as well! So, if you can't SAY or THINK anything nice, then DON'T SAY or THINK ANYTHING at ALL! How can you not think anything at all? Well, that would seem impossible. So our only option is to clean up our thoughts and our words! Christ said that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. Our thoughts affect everything we say and do! That's why the Psalmist wanted his words and the meditations of his heart to be pleasing to God!
TRAINING UP A CHILD HOMEWORK:
1. Help your child memorize Psalm 19:14 and be able to recite it to me next Sunday.
2. Keep reading through the Book of James with your child for the months of January and February - Specifically James 3:1-12.

A Mother's Joy
Please allow me to be a mom for a moment and share some special things that are going on in the lives of our children.
First, Matt, our oldest is doing very well in college. He's attending the University of Mobile on scholarship and living it up in a new dorm room with full amenities! He did extremely well his first semester, despite having English and Speech at the same time (yuck...I'm sorry, they are not math!) He's dove right in to college life, made new friends, and then grew up on us just in a matter of weeks. His favorite part of college life? The food of course! He LOVES the delictable treats of the campus cafeteria! The boy can't help but to take after his dad in that respect. The child needs brain fuel with the high powered course load he has! He's already taking many of the courses required for his major, Computer Information Science. Classes like Network Distribution Systems, Accounting, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, ...YUCK again! God certainly blessed Mathew in the IQ department! He's also a hard worker and never complains about anything. He's steadfast and does what needs to be done. He's loving college life. And what's more, he's matured so much. I knew my little boy had grown up when he asked for dress clothes for Christmas instead of video games. Yes, he did! He wanted church clothes to wear over there in Mobile. AMEN!!! He truly has a heart for Christ though he's not very vocal about it. I've caught him daily reading his Bible. When God strikes him with something he gets a glint in his eye when he shares it with me. That's so neat to see. Yes, he's a quiet guy, but a deep thinker. And when Mathew talks, people listen...it might be the only time they her him speak:-)
Then there is Miss Brittany, the social, athletic, studious butterfly. She started high school this year with gusto. She ran cross country, made the JV Girls basketball team, and plans to run track. God blessed her with amazing athletic abilities! Come watch her play and see what she does when she scores. You'll see her do a quick little gesture pointing up after she makes a basket. Why? That's her signal giving God the credit and the glory for each basket she makes. She knows it was He who gave her athletic gifts and in return she uses it to point others to Christ. She made the decision to do that. She's a member of First Priority and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She's also an honors student - ranked #13 in her class out of 566! Now, she's a freshman so that is still subject to change, but still this is a tremendous feat! Her motto in 5th grade was "Beauty and Brains." LOL!!! She's smart and hard working. Very responsible. She also loves children and teaches the PK class in church. She loves her friends. She has a wonderful Christian boyfriend. She's a blessing to everyone who knows her. And most of all, she loves the Lord and it shows.
Last but not least is Michael, a.k.a. the Soccer King, a.k.a. Little Man, a.k.a. Mr. Drama King. What a little mess! And I mean that in a good way. This child is FUUUNNNYYY!!! Oh, and Mr. Social Agenda. He loves his friends and is on SGA for his 4th grade class. He's a hard little worker in school and makes good grades. He's very smart and a history buff like his dad. He also loves playing soccer and basketball. He loves hanging out with his friends. He is an avid gamer...he LOVES board games and has quite a collection! He's decided to be an aerospace engineer when he grows up. He has an aerospace engineer poster on his wall to remind him of his future goal. Now that most likely will change, but at least he has a plan:-) He, like his older siblings, is so sweet natured. And you know what else? He also loves the Lord. The first thing he does in the mornings is read his Bible and pray. The last thing he does at night before he goes to bed is read his Bible and pray. You see, I get up early and have quiet times. I get on my knees and pray and then I read my Bible. Michael saw me doing that last year. He interrupted me a couple of times and I told him to wait until I had finished my quiet times. Then one day, I went into his room to set out his clothes for the day. When I walked in, I found him on his knees, praying, with his Bible open in front of him. My throat tightened and my eyes immediately began to water. The he told me, "Mommy, don't bother me. I'm praying and having my quiet time." Oh my heart be still!
Yes, as a mom, I am very proud of my children, but not in a vain, bragging kind of way. I'm proud of who they have become in Christ. The pride I have is not a selfish pride for personal gain, but a thankful heart of what God is doing in and through them. I'm so thankful that, so far, they have made godly choices in their lives. I'm thankful that at this point, they love the Lord and choose to follow Him. I pray that they will continue to do so.
Being a parent isn't always easy. Raising up our children in the Lord isn't always easy, either. We are not a perfect family and my children are not little angels. We, like all families, have our moments. We've had our struggles and our share of troubles in raising our children. As a family, we have struggled through ADHD, cancer, severe asthma, hearing/speech impairments, and other issues. So please don't think we are the perfect family with the perfect kids. We are far from it! We are just thankful for our children and the wonderful days we have with them. Enjoy your children. Love on them. Take time with them. Be a model for them in the Christian walk.
Thank you for allowing me to share my children with you. My desire is that they are a blessing to you and others.

Wonderful Websites: D6 Websites from Proverbs 31 Ministries
A big thank you to my friend Crystal who brought the following websites to my attention. Renee Swopes' website is a wonderful resource for parents. Renee's blogs center on Deuteronomy 6:5-7 "5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. 6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up."
The D6 website has some wonderful resources for children and families. Check them out. These links will be posted on the left of my blog with the other blog links.
You will also notice another NEW LINK on my blog list - Renae Christian, PCC's worship and youth pastor. Check out Renae's blog and be encouraged by what she has to say!

Wise Words to Our Children
"And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. So take this seriously. The LORD has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work."—1 Chronicles 28:9–10
Encouragement for Today
"David's public charge to his son Solomon is a charge every Christian parent gives: worship and serve God with your whole heart and with a willing mind; seek him always, understand your calling—your special way to serve God in the world; and be strong and do the work. David had laid lots of groundwork for Solomon to build the Temple, which was David's dream and was to become Solomon's calling. David had secured the materials and made the blueprint. He had thought everything through, and he passed it all on to Solomon. What preparations have you made for the next generation?" —Diane Eble, author of Abundant Gifts: A Daybook of Grace-Filled Devotions

Another Prayer Answered: Wednesday Nights Take II
God had so richly answered prayers over the children's minsitry. Specifically for it to grow. I have prayed for numerical growth - meaning we'd reach as many children as possible with the love of Jesus Christ. God is answering this prayer as we grow by leaps and bounds both on Sunday mornings and on Wednesday nights. I have prayed for spiritual growth of the children and their families, which I've seen answered time and time again. But one prayer I've had HEAVY on my heart is the prayer for additional people to step up into teaching and leading.
God has sent wonderful people to teach and help. But WE CONTINUE TO GROW, which of course means, WE NEED MORE TEACHERS AND LEADERS. I and our current volunteers can only do so much unless we are cloned:-) I'm just sayin'...
Let me share with you how God has begun to answer this specific prayer this week.
1. We have a wonderful lady who just stepped up to teach the PK class on a rotating basis during 1st service. She is an experienced PK teacher and we are blessed to have her, and our other teachers, on board.
2. I was taken by totally by surprise after church today. A lady approached Miss Jodi about starting a PK/KG Class on Wednesday Nights. THIS IS HUGE!!! We currently DO NOT have a PK class on Wednesday nights. So the little ones were having to come in with the elementary children. This was becoming a bit of an issue because of the LARGE NUMBER of children God was sending to us on Wednesday nights. I have been in PRAYER ALL WEEK, knowing God was leading me to split the class into two. A class for 3yrs-KG and a class for 1st through 4th grade. The problem was that I had no leadings from God as to who to ask to teach it. Unbeknownst to me, Miss Jodi had specifically prayed about this on THIS VERY MORNING! So, when this wonderful lady came to us after church today, I knew that it was He who was at work. He had it under control the WHOLE TIME! I should've know he'd provide the right person at the right time.
Now, you may not understand why I'm so excited about this answered prayer so let me break it down for you. To find someone who is willing to teach children on a regular basis is rare. To find someone who is willing to teach the younger ones is even rarer still. It takes a very special person to teach such a wonderful age group. But, then again, we worship a wonderful God who faithfully answers our prayers with AWESOME deeds!
'You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds,O God our savior. You are the hope of everyone on earth, even those who sail on distant seas.' Psalm 65:5
What prayers has He faithfully answered in your life?

To the Depths: What Your Child Learned Today in Church (Jan 18)
Bible Lesson: Today your child learned the story of Ruth(Ruth 1 and 2).
Main Point: I will not just talk about the right thing, I will do the right thing!
Bible Verse: "So you see, faith by itself isn't enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless." James 2:17
Bible Readings at Home: Please read through the Book of James with your child through the months of January and February. James is so rich with messages from God on how to live the Christian Life. The primary passages that correspond to today's lesson is James 2:14-20. Your child learned today that talking about what is right and knowing what is right just isn't enough. We must ACTUALLY DO what is right. God wants us to be doers of His Word. You see, like one of the children so keenly said, FAITH and GOOD DEEDS are a PACKAGE DEAL! James says you can't have one without the other. GOOD DEEDS are the EVIDENCE of our FAITH. Just hearing the Word week after week in church isn't enough. FAITH without any WORKS is DEAD FAITH! You may give lipservice to God but what you do is the PROOF of your faith! Although we can not earn our way into heaven through good deeds, our good deeds should be the natural outflow of our faith. We must LIVE OUR FAITH everyday! Stress to your child the importance the 'doing'. Simply talking about helping isn't helping at all!
TRAINING UP A CHILD HOMEWORK:
1. Help your child memorize James 2:17 and be able to recite it to me next Sunday.
2. Keep reading through the Book of James with your child for the months of January and February.
3. SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT: We will have a special collection this week for the Angel Food Pantry. We are asking the children to bring in canned goods for the pantry on Wednesday and Sunday. The Angel Food Pantry provides food to families in need. The Pantry has already helped several families in our church who were in great need. Explain to your child how helping others like this relates to today's lesson.
4. Help your child come up with other ways they can help others. Then help them follow through with one of their ideas.

Some People I Admire
Here's to those I admire, whose acts of faith and love may go unnoticed by others. You guys ROCK! I'm honored to know you!
I admire the children who share their love with the seniors at Berryhill Manor.
I admire the little girl who encouraged her church friends to invite other kids to church.
I admire the teenage boy who walks to 2 miles to church on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings because his parents don't go.
I admire the teenage girls who answer Christ's call to serve teaching and helping in children's ministry. They don't know what wonderful mentors and examples they are to the children.
I admire the widower who lost his wife over a year ago, yet greets everyone with a smile and a hug.
I admire the students at Pace High who are standing up for their faith in the midst of the ACLU's lawsuit. No one asked them to, they just are. I especially admire the young man who has started a morning Bible Study before school at his house and 100 kids showed up!
I admire the faith of the family who is affected by cancer. What an incredible faith and strength they have!
I admire my husband, whose faith is strong and is my gentle giant, a quiet leader, wonderful father, and the rock of strength God placed in my life.
I admire the friend who has courageously stood up for her children through a health crisis and other difficult situations. Yet she is always ready to help others in their time of need.
I admire the friends who serve in children's ministry though their lives are already so busy. Neither rain, sleet, snow, hail, nor high water keeps them from serving!
I admire the friend who is always so supportive and ready to help at a moments notice...even coming to babysit me in recovery after surgery. "I'm in pain and I gotta pee!" She saw me at my worst and survived!
I admire my fellow believers around the world who put their lives on the line to share the Gospel.
I admire the single moms who make sure their children are in church and are being brought up in the Lord.
I admire the parent whose spouse is working long distance or stationed oversees. You guys have so much strength to keep your families going through these times.
I admire those who have overcome addictions and life's troubles, who are now experiencing life filled with hope and joy! You have such a strength about you and your lives are such a great testimony.
I admire the pastor and his wife, who have risked all and remained obedient to God's calling.
I admire the parents who have dedicated themselves to spiritual growth and committed to ensuring their children are 'trained up in the way they should go.'
I admire the friends who faithfully teach/help in a moments notice in an emergency, even if it's not their turn.
And you know what? Every one of these people are the most humble, selfless people I know. The Lord surely delights in each and everyone of them.
'For the Lord delights in his people;he crowns the humble with victory.' Psalm 149:4
These are just some of the people that I admire. They are special and awesome!

Answered Prayers: Wednesday Night Wrap Up
What a night! We had 28 elementary age children at Bible Study tonight! We broke a record for Wednesday nights tonight! God is doing great things in PCC Children's Ministry! We had full on church here tonight between the youth (50+) and the children (28 plus parents). IT WAS AWESOME!
May I take a moment to say that the growth of the Wednesday night Children's Bible Study Class is NO SMALL FEAT. I remember when we tried to start midweek Children's groups in the past. When we first started, we'd have maybe two or three kids show up, two of which were mine! Now, we have almost as many children showing up on Wednesday nights as we do Sunday mornings - DEFINITELY SIGNS OF LIFE in our children's ministry. Both children and families are being SPIRITUALLY IMPACTED. God is bringing about change in the lives of children, in the lives of parents, and in the life of this church! The fact that these parents have committed to bringing their children on Wednesday nights...and their NEIGHBORS & FRIENDS CHILDREN along with them, is a sign of strong, growing believers!
Let me share a sweet experience:
One little girl made flyers inviting other kids to church. She brought them to church this past Sunday with her and gave them to the children at church, asking them to use it to invite other children to church. As a result, we had several visitors come to the Wednesday night class. One CHILD getting other KIDS involved in inviting KIDS to CHURCH! AWESOME! Out of the mouths of babes...
God is so good, isn't he! Grace and peace.

To The Depths: What Your Child Learned in Church Today (Jan 11)
Bible Lesson: Today your child learned the story about Paul and Silas in Prison(Acts 16:16-36).
Main Point: When troubles come our way, I should praise God!
Bible Verse: "Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy." James 1:2
Bible Readings at Home: Please read through the Book of James with your child through the months of January and February. James is so rich with messages from God on how to live the Christian Life. The primary passages that correspond to today's lesson is James 1:2-4.
Your child learned today that when we are having a problem or going through tough times there is a correct way God wants us to act. Whining, complaining, criticizing, worrying, and avoiding the problem are not ways God wants us to respond to troubles. In fact, we must do quite the opposite. IN TIMES OF TROUBLE WE ARE TO PRAISE GOD!!! We saw how Paul and Silas were unjustly beaten and jailed in Acts 16:16-36. Instead of complaining, worrying, and giving up hope, they sang praises to God in prison. Even Jesus Christ, as He was being crucified, never uttered a word of complaint. Unjustly beaten, falsely accused, arrested, and sentenced to death, Our Lord never once complained. If anyone had a reason to complain, it would be He. But He didn't!
Praising God when we face troubles does two things. First, it takes the focus off of us and our problems and refocuses us on God - where our focus should be! He already has delivered us, we just need to claim the victory. Plus, by focusing on God in times of trouble, something bad is removed from our focus and replaced with something good. Second, by praising God in times of troubles, our faith is strengthened and we develop the endurance we need to grow into more mature believers. See my article A Walk through the Book of James: Perseverance. http://bloggin4god.blogspot.com/2009/01/in-depth-walk-through-book-of-james.html
TRAINING UP A CHILD HOMEWORK:
1. Help your child memorize James 1:2 and be able to recite it to me next Sunday.
2. Keep reading through the Book of James with your child for the months of January and February. Take it in small chunks at a time. James is rich of life applications of the Word!
3. Help your child with their verse word puzzle they received in class today. It will reinforce the memory verse.
God bless you! Grace and peace!

"This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand," Acts 2:32-34
In this passage we see references to the three Persons of the Godhead-the Trinity. The word Trinity is derived from 'tri,' meaning three, and the word unity, meaning united as one. This is sometimes hard for new believers (or mature believers) to completely understand. The Trinity is made up of three Persons - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All three make up the Godhead. Three Persons - One God! Each Person of the Godhead has a different role within the Godhead. In simple terms, God the Father directs all things. Jesus Christ, God the Son, sits at the right hand of God the Father, ever working on our behalf. He rules over His Body, The Church. Through His sacrifice, men who repent and call on His Name will be saved. God the Holy Spirit dwells within the hearts of believers, giving us guidance and comfort - helping us to understand God and His perfect Will. We receive the Holy Spirit when we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior. Each of the three Persons of the Godhead are equally important. Each has always existed. In Genesis 1:2 we see evidence of the Holy Spirit right off the bat, "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. " Also in Genesis Chapter 1, we see additional reference to the Trinity,
"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. " Genesis 1:26
Notice God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Who is the 'us' and the 'our' God is referring to? The three Persons of the Trinity. There were no other beings equal to God the Father who could be included in the 'us' other than God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. John 1:1-4 says,
" In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. "
Who is the WORD? Jesus Christ!
A simple example to help understand the Trinity is water. Water has three forms - solid (ice), liquid, and gas (steam). All three are water, just different forms with different roles. Ice, solid water, could represent God the Father, his omniscent and omnipotence directing events throughout time. Then there is liquid water. It could represent Jesus Christ, God the Son, who poured out His Life to pay for our sins and save those who accept Him as Savior. Then there is steam, evaporated water. Steam could represent the Holy Spirit who resides in the hearts of believers. Three forms, but still water. Three Persons, but still God! How awesome!

I AM
When God spoke to Moses in the wilderness, Moses asked who it was speaking to him. God's reply, "I AM..." (Exodus 3:14) So much power and greatness behind those two seemingly small words. When God spoke to Abram (Abraham), He identified Himself as "I AM." Jesus identified Himself as "I AM" when He was arrested in the Garden. Check it out:
"Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground." John 18:4-6
So how do we even have a chance at knowing God, who He is, and how He acts? We can because He reveals Himself to us in terms we can understand. Lets look at a couple of examples. Think about a little baby. A baby can't understand what we're saying. So we talk to it with coos, baby talk, and using simple terms. They can understand some of what we are saying but not all. People who have pets also talk to their pets in simple terms and instructions. Pets cannot understand everything we say. We can train them to understand some of what we tell them, but not all. In both cases, we bring our communication down to their level of understanding. Like these examples, God communicates with us in terms we can understand - through His Word (The Bible), through prayer, through the Holy Spirit, and through other believers. He even sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to communicate with us face to face - The Word Made Flesh!
God loves us and has made every effort to reveal Himself to us, even sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins! Are we using every effort to understand and know Him? Let's praise the Great I AM!!!

Wow, when He spoke the words, "I AM", those who came to arrest him went backwards and fell to the ground - not voluntarily but as a result of the sheer power of God the Son's utterance of "I AM!"
"I AM" is usually followed by identifying information, such as "I am strong" or "I am smart" or "I am rich." God is the Great I AM! In fact, God is so great and awesome that we cannot even begin to comprehend His greatness. We humans are limited by our 'finiteness' - (If 'finiteness' wasn't a word before, it is now!) God is not limited by what we understand of Him. He is always good, but his goodness is beyond what we could ever imagine! He is beyond compare. There is none like Him!So how do we even have a chance at knowing God, who He is, and how He acts? We can because He reveals Himself to us in terms we can understand. The History Channel on Revelation
Okay, so I was chilling out last night, flipping through the TV stations and I landed on the History Channel...Scott's favorite channel, (that is when they are actually showing shows about history). The show that was on at the time was discussing the end time judgements from the Book of Revelation. The Book of Revelation is captivating for both believers and nonbelievers alike as it contains prophecy about the End of Times.
In this documentary, like many secular documentaries about Biblical topics, the goal was to find scientific explanations to the events described in Revelation. One part of the discussion turned to the Bowl (Vile) Judgements found in Revelation 16:3-4 in which the seas and the rivers are turned to blood. Scientists were interviewed to determine if such events were possible, and if so, what could cause them. The scientists quickly pointed to the possibility that John was referring to the Red Tide Phenomenon that has been known to plague the oceans and kill sea life. Scientists went on to say that a worldwide outbreak of the Red Tide would make the oceans appear red and kill a large percentage of sea life. Details like these are fascinating, because they show us that such things are possible from a human perspective.
Now, here's my point: Though it is important to study Revelation, understand the signs leading to the end times, and understand the judgements that mankind will face, I don't really have to analyze exactly how God will accomplish all of this. I simply need to know that He will. When He does, there will be no doubt whatsoever that it is He who is responsible. I don't need to know exactly how He accomplished His great works in the past, how He accomplishes it in the present, or how He'll accomplish it in the future. All I need to know is that He did what He said He did AND He'll do what He says He will do. This is the Truth that has stood the test of time! We don't need to bog ourselves down in attempting to apply human explanations to Godly feats! We simply need to believe. We can count on HIM to always fulfill His promises - and He WILL!
"For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas, Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says. For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory."

To the Depths: What Your Child Learned in Church Today (Jan 4)
Bible Lesson:
Today your child learned the story about the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-35).
Main Point:
God loves everyone so should I!
Bible Verse:
"For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Galatians 5:14
Bible Readings at Home: Please read through the Book of James with your child through the months of January and February. James is so rich with messages from God on how to live the Christian Life. The primary passages that correspond to today's lesson is James 2:8-9.
Your child learned today that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. We talked about how it's easy for us to love our family and our friends. However, there are a lot more people in the world than our family and friends - and God commands us to love them all. God loves everyone - He chooses to love us - all of us. Therefore, we should love others as well. It's not always easy. We discussed how we always tend to love the popular, cool kids, or tend to gravitate toward the kids who are easy to like or who are funny. However, God's love doesn't stop there so neither should ours. We saw how it's often hard for us to love those who we see as different, strange, weird, or mean. But they are our neighbors, too, and therefore we should show them love. How? By treating them the way we want to be treated, by looking out for their interests and not just our own, and by treating them with respect, or helping them if they are in need.
Showing love to others this week is a great way to start off the New Year!
TRAINING UP A CHILD HOMEWORK:
1. Help your child memorize Galatians 5:14 and be able to recite it to me next Sunday.
2. Your child brought home a Friend Journal. Have them find a friend (preferably someone new) and answer the questions asked on the journal page. The goal is for them to reach out to someone new and show an interest in learning about them. Then encourage your child to show that person God's love and pray for them.
God bless you and your family as you dive into God's Word and live it! This is a perfect opportunity to instill in your family the Spiritual Development Pastor Ronnie preached about today! (BTW, wasn't today's sermon just AWESOME!)

Exception to the Rule
"Solomon loved the Lord and followed all the decrees of his father, David, except that Solomon, too, offered sacrifices and burned incense at the local places of worship. The most important of these places of worship was at Gibeon, so the king went there and sacrificed 1000 burnt offerings. That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, 'What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you.'" 1 Kings 3: 3-5
Usually this passage is quoted to show Solomon's noble request for wisdom. He could have ANYTHING and God promised to give it to him, but he requested wisdom. Now the rest of the story is that God did grant this request and then some. Because Solomon's request pleased God, God made him the wisest man that ever lived - or ever will live. (1 Kings 3:10-12) But wait! There's more! God also made him the richest and most famous man at the time (1 Kings 3:13-14)
But lets take another look at the passage quoted above - specifically verse 3. Though Solomon loved the Lord and followed the Lord, there was a bit of a problem. Did you see it in this passage, "except that Solomon, too, offered sacrifices and burned incense at the local places of worship." Oooooo!!! EXCEPT, except what? EXCEPT is a term usually applied when someone is not following the rules! Except that Solomon was not obedient in worshipping God the way God had commanded His people. Check out Deuteronomy 12:13, 14. God's Laws said the Israelites were to sacrifice only in SPECIFIED places AND that it was to be done under the watchful eye of the priests. Even King Solomon was not immune to God's Law. Notice also, that God did not appear to Solomon as he was offering the sacrifices, but only later that night. Further showing that though God honored Solomon's prayer, but He did not condone the inappropriate sacrifice.
Here's the bottom line. We are all held to accountability to God. God will and does answer our prayers. But, that doesn't mean He is pleased with everything that we are doing. Sometimes He is thrilled with us, like He was with Solomon for asking for wisdom. But other times, maybe not so much. BUT HE ALWAYS LOVES US NO MATTER WHAT! Furthermore, WE CAN ALWAYS CALL ON HIM TO FORGIVE US and HELP US!
We are all human here. We all struggle in our Christian walk every day. Some days we get it right and those days are just AWESOME, aren't they! Some days, well, we mess up big time and wish we could just start the day over. But no matter what, we can rely on Him to help us live righteously - EVERY SINGLE DAY! It's tough. It's overwhelming at times. It can even become tiresome and weary at times. We may experience 'burn out.' And yes, we sometimes fall back into our comfort zone - allowing our past habits and sin to creep into our lives again. Why? Because it's what is most familiar to us. It's not what we want, but it's what happens sometimes. And sometimes, we do cave in to the world and it's demands. Look at Solomon, he worshipped at the most 'important' place of worship - Gibeon. Important in whose eyes? God's or the world's. This happens even today. I've known people who chose the church they attend solely for socio-economic, political, social gain, or other worldly reasons - churches that are important to them because they think they have worldly advantages for attending. (Not that the church is worldly, just that the person's reason for attending the church is worldly.) I'm not judging these people for it - they told me this themselves.
Don't let spiritual missteps keep you from EXPERIENCING GOD in your life. Experience the FULLNESS of what He has to offer you. He'll give you the strength to overcome obstacles that steer you off course and will help you get back on track. Simply ask Him where the 'exceptions' are in your life. Then follow through in obedience to correct what He has revealed to you.

An In Depth Walk through the Book of James: Perseverance
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenver you face trials of many kinds, beacuse you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James 1:2-4
As I mentioned in another blog, 2008 was a very tough year for me. Many within our church family also struggled with trials in their lives as well - financial crisis, health crisis, loss of loved ones, broken relationships, just to name a few. The trials and tribulations I personally faced seem unsurmountable to me at times. Though I knew that God was greater than these trials, these experiences were extremely difficult to live through. I kept reminding myself of Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." But still, life was tough. It seemed as though we'd barely get through one crisis and another would hit us square in the face. It was like we couldn't get a break even if we bought one! I wondered what God was doing in all of this. Why? Why did we have to go through so many troubles? What was the point? After all, He promised a future filled with peace and hope. These experiences seemed like a far cry from this promise.
But then, in my heart, I knew that God was bringing us through these tough experiences to develop something more in us. You see, our idea of what is best for us is sometimes completely different that what God knows is best for us. For it is in the trials of life that our faith is made complete. We cannot mature as believers if everything is always coming up roses. Trials develop spiritual maturity. I'm not the same person I was a year ago. As a result of what God has brought me through, my faith has reached a level never reached before. Not only has my faith been strengthened, but so has my relationship with him as well as with others. Through brokeness and ashes, He has brought forth beauty.
Though I would not have chosen to experience any of these trials and tribulations this past year, I'm so glad that I did! God knew what He was doing. He knew what weaknesses within me needed shoring up. He knew what was needed so that I could better love, live for, and serve Him. He knows what He is doing in your life as well. Trust Him in good and bad times. Allow Him to continue a perfect work in you as you rely on Him daily. He knows what each and every one of us need. Don't give up! Ask for perserveance and trust Him to get you through your circumstances. In the end He, will bring forth spiritual maturity and completeness in you. So when you are facing hard times, with Christ you can endure ANYTHING! So when trouble comes your way, count it as a joyous opportunity for God to develop something WONDERFUL in you!
