Aaron & Miriam Criticize Moses
As I study the book of numbers, it is very obvious that the Israelites just were not happy campers! They began complaining about things before they even left Egypt, about the heavy burdens Pharoah laid upon them because of Moses demanding their freedom. They complained once they were freed. No matter how many miracles they witnessed God perform on their behalf, for their survival no less, they complained. In this passage, we see that even Aaron and Miriam got on the complaining bandwagon...and about what? Moses' wife.
Well, there's more to the story. You see, their complaint wasn't just about Moses' wife. That was just a smoke screen. Looking deeper into this passage, you see that they questioned Moses' authority, "They said, 'Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Hasn't he spoken through us too?'" Bottom line, their criticism was stemmed in their jealousy toward Moses. They wanted to be just as important and lead the Israelites just like Moses. Now, bear in mind, that Moses had a special relationship with God - one like only very few have ever had. God spoke directly to Moses. He spoke to prophets only in dreams and visions. But with Moses, God said, "Of all my house, he is the one Itrust. I speak to him face to face, clearly and not in riddles! He sees the LORD as he is. So why were you not afraid to criticize my servant Moses?'" (Numbers 12:7-8) God called Miriam and Aaron on the carpet for their jealousy and pride. He put them in their place and as a result, Miriam was striken immediately with leprosy for 7 days.
Today, like then, we struggle with jealousy, envy, and pride. When we criticize others or begin to question their authority, we need to be sure that any criticism is valid and constructive, out of pure motives. We need to ensure we handle it in a prayerful, respectful manner - going directly to the person or people affected. We must examine our hearts to ensure there is no pride, jealousy, or other sinful reason that produces this criticism. Leaders, pastors, employers, and people in authority are placed in their positions by God Himself. When we wrongly criticize others or question their authority out of jealousy or pride, we are not only showing disrespect to them, but also to God. "For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God." (Romans 13:1)
Often, like with Miriam and Aaron, the criticism is stemmed in minor disagreements that are just a smoke screen for bigger, underlying issues. These minor disagreements sometimes create a diversion from the real issue - jealousy, pride, and envy. So when we find ourselves in constant disagreement and criticism of someone else, we should stop and ask ourselves what our motives truly are? Are we truly dealing with the issue or are we creating a smoke screen by attacking the person's character. Ask God to reveal the motives of your heart and if they are rooted in jealousy, envy, or pride, repent and ask for His help.
If you are the target of unjust criticism, the best thing to do is rely on God. Trust Him and turn the situation over to Him. Don't take the criticism personally. Let God deal with the person. Pray for the person as well, they need your prayers.
Ultimately, we should operate out of love for one another. So before we open our mouths to criticize, let us get on our knees and pray for the person we're so critical of. Let us ask God to open our hearts to them and fill us with love and compassion for them. Let us make sure our motives are pure, good, and godly - not rooted in our own agenda.
"Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning." 2 John 1:6

Overcoming Complaining
Life is hard sometimes, isn't it? There are so many negative things in this world that affect us. As human beings, it's natural for us to focus on the negative, especially if we are in the midst of troubles. Like you, I've been through so many negative, hard experiences more times than I care to count. It's at those times that I weaken and am most prone to allow the negative to come out. Before I know it, my mouth has engaged and I've said something negative, without really meaning or wanting to!
As believers, we must be extra careful about complaining. A complaining, critical spirit indicates a couple of things about a person. First, it indicates the condition of their heart. Scripture says, "A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart." (Luke 6:45) When I came across this verse, it changed my life forever. I realized that even innocent 'venting' can turn into complaining in a hurry. I had to stop 'venting' even about the silliest of things.
Complaining not only reveals the condition of my heart, but when I complain, I'm complaining against God! When I complain, I'm saying to others, "Hey, I'm not happy with God, where He's placed me, and what He's doing!" The books of Exodus and Numbers are full of examples of the Israelites complaining among themselves. They weren't happy that they left the 'comforts' of Egypt behind. Though they were slaves, they could only remember the food and comforts that were guaranteed back in Egypt. In Exodus, they complained against Moses and Aaron about water and then about food. We find their complaints at the end of Exodus 15 and in Exodus 16. Notice what Moses said in Exodus 16:8, "...Yes, your complaints are against the LORD not against us." He wanted the people to understand that when they complained, they were truly complaining against God. Their complaints showed their lack of faith and their heart condition toward God Himself! They were saying they were dissatisfied with God and what He was doing through them and for them. Like the Israelites, when we complain, it shows that we are not thankful for blessings God has given us. It shows dissatisfaction in our relationship with Him. Is this really what we want to be saying? Complaining is detrimental to our witness for Christ.
So, as believers, we are to, "...Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people." (Phillippians 2:14 - 15) How can we be a light to the world and draw others to Christ if we have a critical, complaining spirit?
Does the Bible say that complaining is wrong? No, but complaining is wrong depending on WHO we take our complaints to. If you searched the Bible for the godly way of handling complaints, you will see many cases where the complaint is taken straight to God - not others.
"O God, listen to my complaint. Protect my life from my enemies’ threats." Psalm 64:1
"I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles." Psalm 142:2
"Lord, you always give me justice when I bring a case before you. So let me bring you this complaint:Why are the wicked so prosperous? Why are evil people so happy?" Jeremiah 12:1
If our complaint involves a person, especially another believer, we should take care to take that complaint directly to that person and not talk about it among others. Matthew 18:15-16 says, "If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confiremed by two or three witnesses." Notice, this Scripture specifically indicates that the complaint is about a sin committed against you by the other person. So, before you bring up a complaint to or against another believer, ensure that your complaint is over a sin that person has committed against you. Sometimes, we have complaints against others that don't meet this criteria - the other person did not commit a sin against us at all. It might be just a difference of opinion, something we don't like, or a disagreement over a decision. In this case, we need to go directly to that person to resolve the issue - not complain to others.
It is also wrong if our complaints are wrapped up in our own selfishness and not God's Will. "You must not test the Lord your God as you did when you complained at Massah." Deuteronomy 6:16 If we are living for Christ, any complaints we bring to God need to be done in humility. God wants to help you with your problems and complaints, but when you bring them to Him, then you must be prepared to let Him deal with them in His way. Yield yourself to His Will on the matter, then don't complain. Watch Him work in the situation. "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Romans 8:28
If you are struggling with a critical, complaining spirit, He can help. Though I still struggle, He's helped me and He'll help you. Just ask. Focus on Him, His Greatness, and the many blessings He has given you. Thank Him for saving you through the Blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. Focusing on Christ and what He's done for you will help you overcome complaining. After all, He suffered more injustice than anyone else ever has - and without complaint. Though innocent, He died for our sins!
I'm praying for you!

Be Holy
What does it mean to be holy? According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, there are several applications of the word 'holy.'
1: exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness
2: divine
3: devoted entirely to the deity or the work of the deity
How can we be holy and live a holy life? Through complete immersion in the Lord and His will. Seek His guidance daily. Consistently make choices in our lives that honor Him. Give Him the credit. Worship Him wholeheartedly. Pray without ceasing. Bow before Him in prayer and submission. Trust in Him. Be faithful. Meditate on His Word. Listen for Him. Watch for Him. Obey Him. Live your life to bring Him glory. Love God and love others. Rely on His Spirit for help.
We are to be holy, to be set apart, different from nonbelievers. How can we draw others to Christ if there is no difference in the way we live and the way the world lives? We are to still reach out to the lost with Christ's love and the Good News, but without living like the world. We must live a holy life, but with humility, without being spiritual 'snobs' toward others. It's a delicate balance but God can help us. No, we can't be perfect all of the time. Yes, we'll make mistakes. But He'll forgive us when we ask. God knows your heart and He is there to help you live a holy life. Be holy for the Lord your God is holy!

Ice Cream & Jesus
It's really amazing to stand back and watch God work through these precious hearts. God is growing these young hearts spiritually and in big ways. The kids are really into the lessons. Last night we studied Jesus' superpowers - his power and authority as the Son of God. We also began a prayer journal for each child. And the prayer request list, wow, such spiritual maturity in the things they named...those who were sick, who were going through hard times, for friends, family, the lost. Again, WOW!
I'm just honored that God has blessed me in being a part of this wonderful group of children! He's amazing!
If your child isn't with us on Wednesday nights, then please, by all means, make every effort to get them there. It's so very important! We meet on Wednesday nights beginning at 6 p.m. Kids who have just completed KG through 5th grade. Join us as we continue studying "Beginning the Christian Adventure."

Dream Big: Heart Condition
So, what is your heart condition? Did you know that if you want to achieve your Big Dream that you must first have a healthy heart? According to Bruce Wilkenson, the author of the Prayer of Jabez, The Dream Giver, and Beyond Jabez, there are two heart conditions that we must possess in order for us to be a conduit for God's power.
The first condition of the heart is humility. In order to achieve the big dream, we must be humble. What is humility? Humility IS NOT putting yourself down or counting yourself out. It is not thinking of yourself as totally worthless. Humilty IS looking out for the interests of God and others first. Humility is having a true perspective of yourself, acknowledging your identity in Christ, being greatly loved as His masterful creation. Humility is serving others. Humility is looking to the interest of others, not just your own interests. Paul gives us a wonderful description of Christ-like humility. "Don't be selfish, don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too." Phillippians 2:3-4.
The second condition of the heart is focus. In order to acheive the big dream God has planned for us, we need to be focused. We need to drown out the cares of this world that keep us from accomplishing this dream. The enemy, Satan, loves to distract us. How? Through entertainment, video games, movies, the radio, through family conflict, anxiety, worry, greed, pride, busyness, ...you name it, he'll use it to distract your focus. Our focus needs to be first on Christ, seeking His will and guidance. Our efforts reflect our focus. If our focus is on ourselves, it'll show. We'll not achieve the big dream God has for us. Focus on Christ. Do not take your eyes off of him. Remember Peter? The night Jesus walked on water. Peter wanted to join Him. As long as Peter looked upon Christ, he was fine. He walked on the water. The moment his focus shifted off Christ and he began to fear, he started to sink - to drown.
"Then Peter called to him, 'Lord, if it's really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.' 'Yes, Come,' Jesus said. So Peter went ove the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. 'Save me, Lord!' he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. 'You have so little faith,' Jesus said, 'Why did you doubt me?'" Matthew 14: 27 - 31
Keep your focus on The One who will give you the ability to walk on water. Keep your eyes fixed on The One who will accomplish that big dream through you.
Though Wilkenson mentioned two conditions of the heart, I'd like to add two additional conditions that I believe we need to accomplish God's big dream for us. The third condition of the heart that we need is obedience. We must have obedient hearts. We can not accomplish anything for Christ if we are not obedient! We need to submit to Christ DAILY. It is through our obedience that we show the true condition of our heart. Jesus said, "If you love me, obey my commandments." John 14:15
Finally, I believe the fourth condition of the heart that we need is faith. We must have a heart of faith in order for God to use us in achieving His big plans. Without faith, we are inept in doing anything for Christ. The disciples learned this when they attempted to cast out a demon from a man and failed. In response to this dilemma, Jesus pointed out that it was their lack of faith. He further expounded on this saying, "'I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.'" Matthew 17:20-21 What's the mountain standing in the way of your big dream? Have you asked God to move it? Do you have faith that He will?
So, do you have a healthy heart? Do you have the four heart conditions needed to accomplish the big dream God has set before you? If not, ask Him to search your heart and reveal the unhealthy conditions that keep you from experiencing the joy of living for Him. Repent and ask for His forgiveness. Ask for humilty, focus, faith, and help in obeying Him. Then brace yourself. He may need perform 'surgery' on your heart to get you ready for that big dream.
Take care, friends. He loves you so very much and desires to see you succeed! May we honor and glorify Him today!

Dream Big!
God has a dream for our lives. A BIG DREAM. Have you caught His dream for you? If not then why not? Are you just riding the tide of life, reacting to what comes your way, no plan, no purpose? Do you think this is what God wants of you? Of course not! I rode the waves of life far too long and would have wiped out if it hadn't been for the Hand of God. If you don't know God's big dream for you, then spend time seeking Him and asking Him to reveal it to you. Dream big and then step out on faith in achieving the dream. Our dreaming big for Him allows Him to reveal His glory!
If you have a big dream, is it in alignment with God's will, His purpose, His plan? Or is this your personal dream? Personal dreams are ok, as long as they don't take precedence over our lives and God's will. Be sure that you are seeking God first and living for Him. Perhaps your dreams haven't been fulfilled because they weren't in alignment with God's plans. That was my case.
Big Dreams for God require our participation and great faith. Are you trying to work the dream yourself, relying on your own strength alone? If so, your results, though successful, will be limited because, after all, you are only human. You won't see the bountiful success that God could pull off if you had relied on His help.
Or are you the extreme of this position, relying on God to pull the big dream off for you without investing your own effort in the dream? If so, you will not succeed. God expects us to invest ourselves in accomplishing His big dream for us.
I want you to really ponder these questions in your heart, asking God to reveal the answers to you. You see, with God there are two parts of the equation - our side of the equation and His side of the equation. It's a delicate balance between our faith, our efforts, and reliance upon Him to achieve this dream. We can't achieve the dream alone, but God does require our involvement and faith. Trust him to be "able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" (Ephesians 3:20). He works through us for His glory to be revealed!
So, what is your dream? Is it a big dream? Have you sought God's guidance? Ask Him to reveal His big dream to you. Dare to dream. Dare to step out in faith in achieving that dream. Dare to see God carry out the miracles that only He can perform. Then watch the big dream come to fruition!
"Your dream lies in the direction of an overwhelming obstacle. If you go toward it today, you will bring God honor. And you will experience a life marked by miracles as God intervenes on your behalf."

Thank goodness, I don't have to worry about preparing for school just yet! That's next week:-)
Ok, so you've got your own issues to deal with and really don't need to read mine. So why did I go to such lengths to name every major task I have to accomplish within the next two weeks? Was it to get pity or help? No...maybe...not really, but that would be nice:-) It was to make a point. Most every single one of us are overwhelmed, overworked, and stressed from the many duties and responsibilities that press upon us. What I wanted to convey is that you are not alone. I am there. Others are there. Even Christ experienced this burden. He had even more pressing responsibilities than we. He had to accomplish His ministry on earth in a matter of 3 years, start to finish. He had to train up uneducated fisherman into men who would found the church, thus changing History FOREVER! There were times that even Christ withdrew from the crowds in solitude. Why? To pray and to rest. Even Martin Luther recognized that he was too busy not to spend the first 4 hours of his day in prayer! You read it right....4 HOURS IN PRAYER! I can already sense some of you stressing out, "Great! How would I ever fit 4 hours of prayer into my hectic schedule !?!?!?!"
Face it, we can't do everything on our own. It's impossible. But we can ask for God's guidance and help. Let go of some things. Delegate what we can to others. Delete those things from our lists that aren't critical or necessary. Reach out for help. Life as we know it will not cease to exist if we don't accomplish everything on 'the list'. Maybe it's time to revisit that list. Limit tasks to a manageable size. Include time for fun and time just hanging out with others. Include time for restoration & relaxation. Make dedicated time for prayer, worship, and seeking God. Maybe we can limit our daily to-do lists to just the 3 to 6 most pressing tasks. May I suggest that we revise our list to include a sprinkling of the following:
- Time in dedicated prayer.
- Reading, meditating, & studying Scripture.
- Worshipping God.
- A good, long cup of Starbuck's coffee.
- Breakfast with the fam. (Even if it's a bowl of cereal, that's ok.)
- A family board game.
- Dinner with the fam. (Hot Dogs are fine on busy days.)
- A long soak in a warm, relaxing, luxurious bubble bath! (Doesn't that sound awesome!)
- A walk around the block with hubby.
- Calling a friend.
- Reaching out to someone with the love of Christ.
Don't stress out. Seek Christ's help. It is in Christ alone that we find joy amid the stresses of life.
"As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands." Psalm 119:143

PS - Ok, so the other reason I listed my "To Do" lists above was to keep track of them on my blog. .. this way I can access them at home or church:-) Just another task saving strategy!

Changing of the Seasons
Today, my mother-in-law had out-patient surgery. I went with my in-laws to help out. Scott wasn't able to go and someone needed to sit with his dad and drive them home afterwards. What was supposed to be just a 30 minute surgery and 30 minute recovery turned into an all day affair. Mom had a bad reaction to one of the pain medications given through the IV. It caused strange reactions and drastically affected her respiratory. My eyes stayed glued to the monitor, watching her breathing and her oxygen levels...sometimes they bottomed out and alarms went off. It was an all too familiar experience. A very painful reminder of the hours I spent by Granddaddy's side watching those same vital signs, respiratory readings, and oxygen levels. She snapped out of it as the medication wore off, but it was scary for a little while there. She is still suffering from the remnants of her reaction but was able to go home and is much improved.
As with many of our friends, our lives are shifting into a new season. A season in which we are seeing our roles slowly change from just being the adult children of our parents to being their caretakers. A season in which we are still raising our own children, who need us in so many ways, but in which we are needed more and more by our parents. It's hard to watch our parents and grandparents, who were once so strong and vibrant, begin to fade. These people whom we looked up to, admired, counted on, and sought advice from. Many still have so much to offer and are going strong. For others, we are beginning to hear faint whispers of what is to come. Still others we have lost way before we were ready to.
So, in reflecting on all of this, I want to spend more time with those I love - my husband, my children, our parents, family, friends, our church family - and in doing those things that Christ asks of me. After all, people are important. God thought so that's why He sent His Son to save us! Make time for your loved ones and friends. Make time to reach out to others. It's so very important that you do.
My heart is with you, my friends, all of you who are caring for loved ones, who have loved ones who are ailing, or who have lost loved ones. It's hard. Lean on Christ, He loves you and desires to help you.
"As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength." Psalm 138: 3
I love you and I am praying for you!

Be Still and Know
It is often in quiet times that God speaks to us. In order for Him to do so, we need to slow down and listen. Our quiet times should be just that, quiet times. It is time for us to be silent for once and wait on God. Listen to what He is saying. Read and meditate on His Word. Our prayers should not be just us doing to the talking, but us also listening. A two-way conversation with our loving Father, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to our hearts. We must let go and allow Him to move us - watching throughout each day for opportunities to respond to Him, serve Him, and share His love with others. Watching, waiting, listening.
Once we are still, we are to know that He is God. Recognize His glory. Reflect on His excellent greatness. Study His Word. Honor Him, His power, and His majesty. Adore and exalt Him. Focus on Him. Think of Him throughout the day. Pray often. Devote yourself to living for Him.
The enemy doesn't want us to respond to God in this way. He uses anything to stop us. His best tool is to keep us so busy that we can not be still and know God.
We can deepen our relationship with our Lord. But to do so, we must first be still and know that He is God!

The Value of True Friends
Words can not express how deeply appreciative I am for the outpouring of love, affection, support, prayers, and help that each of you, my friends, have so freely given our family! I have never felt such love and care before in my life. You have not only touched my heart with your kindness, generousity, and love, but also the hearts of my family - immediate and extended.
The food provided by Donna and the PCC Bereavement Ministry Team was SUCH A BLESSING!!! Because of your ministry, our extended family was able share a wonderful meal together for the first time in many years. We gathered in the childhood park that many of us played in growing up. It was here we enjoyed the food, enjoyed good fellowship, and reminesced about 'the good old days.' It was good for us to all be 'home' together. The flowers sent by our church were beautiful and deeply appreciated.
I am overwhelmed at the cards, notes, prayers, emails, hugs, and thoughts for my family, my mother, and I. How precious are each one of these to us. I am also so very thankful for Jodi, Sidney, Christy, & Lorraine who are 'holdin' down the fort this Sunday. Thank you guys for taking care of the children in my absence. I love you guys! I thank God for each of you. I've never had such wonderful friends before!
I was even more humbled and touched when Pastor Ronnie, Renae, Sidney, & Gene arrived at Granddaddy's funeral. This meant so much to me. I am forever grateful and so very thankful they came. Their coming all the way to Troy was a complete surprise and a wonderful blessing. Thank you for coming. It did my heart so much good to have you - my Christian family - there.
I also can not express how much of an impact that our church, the PCC family, had on my mother and family. EVERYTHING you did spoke volumes to them about the God we serve! My Mother was so very touched by the loved poured upon her and us. The PCC family really stepped up to the plate - not only helping a 'brother in need' but reaching out in love to total strangers in need. Thank you friends, for being a true witness to Christ's love to my family. You are my true friends! I pray that I can be a true friend to you as well.

Ja...Ja..Ja...Jive Talkin'
There isn't any radio reception, either. So what could make travelling through a creepy dead zone even scarier? For my kids it would be having to listen to the Bee Gees as we drove through this dead zone! Yep, that's right. We tortured our kids with the musical soundings of the disco kings...the Bee Gees! Ja...Ja...Ja...Jive Talkin... "Stayin' Alive" took on new meaning for our three children! Our daughter's ipod could not compete with the pounding of the disco beat through the car speakers. Oh yeh! We had them where we wanted them, and they knew it!
"Jive Talkin'" was a big hit back in the day. Jive Talkin' was a slang term that referred to when someone was lying, exaggerating, or talkin' big. We came up with wonderful phrases that put this term to good use..."Don't you be givin' me no jive!" or "He's a jive turkey" were what my friends and I would go around saying. We thought we were the uber cool when we spoke like this! We were such dorks!
You know, in life, we still come across people who give us jive instead of truth. Most of the time, we can easily spot a jive talker. However, when it comes to spiritual matters, we sometimes don't spot jive talk so easily. You see, spiritual jive talk can be harder to identify because it usually incorporates Scripture. It sounds like God's Truth, but it's not. Spiritual jive talk misuses scripture, applying it out of context from the rest of the Bible. As believers, we need to protect ourselves from spiritual jive talk. How? By knowing God's Word.
First, make reading your Bible a habit. Don't just read one or two of your favorite books in it. All of the Bible is important for us to know. You can read it from cover to cover or you can skip around and read a book at a time. You can read alternating between a book of the old testament and then a book of the new testament. Many study Bibles come with a yearlong reading plan. It doesn't matter how you read it or where you start, just READ IT. When you finish, start over again. It's by reading your Bible over and over that you begin to understand more and more about God and His Truth.
Next, commit to memorizing scripture. You can start small by memorizing a verse per week. You can be even more ambitious by memorizing entire chapters at a time. My memory isn't what it used to be. To help me, I often write the verse down on sticky notes and post it ALL OVER THE PLACE. My husband makes fun of me. I have them on my refrigerator, desk, car, bible cover, and other key places that I see often throughout the day. Whenever I glance at it, I say it over and over again in my head as often as I can. Because of my memory problems (health related), I ask God to help me memorize His word so that I can hide it in my heart. "I have hidden your word in my heart, that I may not sin against you." (Psalm 119:11) Other people use index cards and organize them according to topic.
Pray and ask God to reveal His Truth to you before you read your Bible and as you learn His Word. Ask Him to bless you with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding as you seek Him wholeheartedly. Ask Him to help you discern His Truth from false teachings and doctrine - to reveal Himself as you read Scripture.
Another idea is to keep a journal and write down any verses that stand out to you. Write down important ideas or information that God has revealed to you as you read. Highlight these things in your Bible. Write a summary of what you read to reinforce your understanding. This doesn't have to be a big deal. You don't even have to use correct grammar. Just jot one or two important ideas or thoughts God has shown you. Write down questions you have. Ask God to reveal the answers to you. Ask your pastor and other beleivers these questions. Compare their answers to Scripture.
Why is it so important to know God's Word? Well, one obvious answer is so that we know His Truth. It is through the Bible that God reveals to us His Nature, His Plan, His Glory, His Son, and how we are to live in Christ. We also need to be able to defend our faith, so that we are quick to give the right answer to those who question us about our faith. Some question in sincerity and if we are unprepared, we could miss an opportunity to witness for Christ.
Another important reason we need to know God's Word ourselves is protection from corrupt and false teachings. I hear people often say that they don't really read much of the Bible, they rely on what a certain pastor, teacher, or author says about God's Word. I can not emphasize enough how DANGEROUS this is!!! We should NEVER, EVER strictly depend on what anyone else says about what is in the Bible without checking it out for ourselves. Yes, different people have different insights of a scripture, but we must always test what is said against the TRUTH, God's Word. We must be careful to test it against the ENTIRITY of the Bible and not just within that verse or set of verses alone. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT WE READ THE WHOLE BIBLE over, and over, and over again. Through repeated readings, God reveals more and more to us. We become familiar with it's teachings and stories. This is why we must pray over scripture and compare what is taught by reputable pastors, teachers, and authors to each other.
"These people are false apostles. They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve." 2 Corinthians 11:13-15
Be prepared for Jive Talkers! I'm praying for you!

Freedom in Christ
Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold. We are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so the people of Israel would not see the glory, even though it was destined to fade away. But the people's minds were hardened, and to the day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ. Yes, even today when they read Moses' writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand. But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord - who is the Spirit - makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image." 2 Corinthians 3:7-18
Because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross for us, we have freedom from sin and death! It is only by turning to the Lord Jesus Christ can a person recieve this freedom. When we accept Christ, we have eternal life through the Holy Spirit! There is no other way to eternal life! The Holy Spirit is the one who gives us a new life in Christ. He is responsible for the rebirth of every believer and helps us live the Christian life.
The old way is the old covenant under the Ten Commandments. Christ didn't come to destroy the law but to fulfill it. (Matthew 5:17) The old way points out our sin and shows us how to obey God. The new way, salvation through Jesus Christ, makes us right with God! The veil represents the veiling of people's minds from understanding scripture that pointed to Jesus Christ. Why were their minds veiled? Because of their pride, hard hearts, and stubborn refusal to repent. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, this veil is removed! We recieve eternal life and freedom from the bondage from sin and death. When we trust in Christ, we are free to live for Him!
So on the day we celebrate the independence of our country, let us also praise the God who gave us freedom from sin and condemnation! Let us give thanks to the Lord who gives us life!
Have a blessed July 4th!

On Having a Bigger View of God
"I have a bigger view of God." or "My view of God is bigger now." Some Believers say this in earnest, expressing how they have spiritually grown and matured in Christ. Others may say this with arrogance in their heart, comparing themselves to other believers. Whether stated in earnest or in arrogance, there are fundamental problems with this type of statement.
First, let us recognize that as believers spiritually mature, we understand more about the glorious Nature of God. God reveals more and more of His Righteousness to us - shaping us, growing us, changing us into the image of His Beloved Son. We all start as 'baby believers.' As we mature in Christ, our understanding of God increases as well. Believers who truly seek Him all mature at different rates and in different ways. We all have different life and spiritual experiences that affects this growth.
Here's the problem. When we state we have a bigger view of God, who or what are we comparing this 'bigger view' to? Are we comparing it to our own personal view of God in the past? If so, then the statement is innocent and factual. A more concerning question is, when we make a statement like this, are we comparing our spirituality to that of other believers? When we compare our spirituality, faith, or view of God to that of other believers, we are entering DANGEROUS territory! We have opened the door to pride, arrogance, ego, and conceit! God didn't want us comparing ourselves to each other in this way. Those who say they have a bigger view of God are either inadvertently or even purposefully elevating themselves above other believers. Whether intended or not, it is a statement of comparison. When we begin comparing our 'spirituality,' the focus is shifted off of God's glory and shifted back on us. In Matthew 7:1-5, Jesus said, "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?"
In addition, a statement like this can be misconstrued by others, even if stated with the purest of intentions. As believers, we need to carefully measure what we say, think, and do. Even when said with the purest intentions, statements such as these can alienate us from our Christian brothers and sisters. Perhaps a better wording would be to very humbly state how God has grown us as believers. Give the credit where the credit is due - to Him!
Another issue that bothers me about this statement is that it is an "I" statement. "I" statements always point back to one's self. We can't avoid "I" statements completely. We're human and these are perfectly acceptable when used in certain statements. However, in the statements we're examining today, statements that supposedly speak to God's glory - "I have a bigger view of God" or "My view of God is bigger now" - we threw in an "I". Again, the motivation behind the statement is at issue. The truth is, NOT A SINGLE ONE OF US could handle the true greatness of our glorious LORD. Therefore, to state that we have a bigger view of God than another believer is like comparing one grain of sand to another. Our finite, human minds can't handle His Greatness! He is more magnificent and holy than we can ever think or imagine! Moses asked God to show His glorious presence. "The LORD replied, ' I will make all my goodness pass before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. But you may not look directly at my face for no one may see me and live.' " (Exodus 33:19-20) So God hid Moses in a crevice and covered Moses with His hand until He passed by. He allowed Moses to see Him from behind. Late, in Exodus 34:29-31 we learn, "When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn't aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the LORD. So when Aaron and the people of Israel saw the radiance of Moses' face, they were afraid to come near him." In verses 33-35 we see that Moses covered his face with a veil whenever his spoke to the people but removed the veil when he spoke with God. Moses face was lit up with the glory of God, just from seeing God from behind! The people couldn't even handle seeing God's glory reflected on Moses' face. He's too glorious for us to see Him and live. So what makes any one of us think that we could even be good enough to compare our finite understanding of God to that of other believers? Who are we to think we have a bigger view than our fellow Christian brothers and sisters?
Here's an even scarier issue with this statement...idol worship. When we begin to worship "our bigger VIEW" of God instead of God Himself, we have just jumped into idol worship. You see, God cannot be defined nor confined by men. When we take our 'our view' of God and elevate it, make it our primary focus, and use it to set us apart from other believers, we are, in essence, worshipping ourselves. We have defined God on our terms, not His. This is true no matter how big or small our view of God is. Our view of God cannot replace God Himself. Focusing on anything above God Himself is idol worship. So if we are defining and worshipping God by our view, we need to pray for forgiveness and His help to get back on track.
Here's the better way. Instead of focusing on OUR VIEW of a bigger God, let us FOCUS on our BIGGER GOD! Human views mean NOTHING! Let us bring attention to THE ONE who is worthy of ALL honor, glory, praise, wisdom, wealth, adoration, and love! Let us FOCUS on HIS GREATNESS and NOT on our VIEW of His Greatness! HE is THE GREAT I AM! Let us not draw attention to ourselves as we are expounding HIS GLORY!
You may or may not agree with me. Whether you do or don't, please pray and ask God to examine your heart. Ask Him to show you His Truth and help you live for Him. I am praying for you! Please pray for me as well. We are all God's children, united in the Body of Christ. You are my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ!

Jesus is Real
Whenever this happens, I try to stop and pay attention to what God is telling me. It sometimes means totally halting my plans - for Bible study, what I wanted to blog about, what I am praying about - to further explore what God is showing me through the verse. Even if I don't think it relates to me at the moment, there is a reason He is revealing it. You see, I'm a little stubborn and thick headed so He sometimes has to thump me over the head repeatedly to get my attention.
Today, God revealed the following verses to me from 2 totally independent sources - as I was reading a devotional book entitled "Thank You Holy Spirit" by Marilyn Hecksher and in my daily e-devotional subscribtion from "Today's Christian Woman."
"Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. "Peace be with you," he said. But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost!
"Why are you frightened?" he asked. "Why are your hearts filled with doubt? Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don't have bodies, as you see that I do." As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet.
Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he ate it as they watched.
Then he said, "When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. "
Luke 24:35–45
These verses speak of one of the many appearances Christ made after He was raised from the dead. Notice what He said and did. He specifically said that He wasn't a ghost and He proved to them why - showing them his hands and feet, proving that He was flesh and blood. He was Jesus Christ, the resurrected Son of God!
Jesus is real! Jesus is alive TODAY, not as a ghost, but in flesh and blood. He is sitting at the right hand of our Mighty God - RIGHT NOW! His hands, feet, and side bearing the scars of what HE did on the cross for us. HE was resurrected in an immortal body, a body of flesh that lives today! A body that could appear and disappear but yet still be touched and felt by others.
The Holy Spirit is real. It is through the Holy Spirit that Christ was resurrected. "The Spirit...raised Jesus from the dead." Romans 8:11 This is the same Spirit that lives within each and every believer - within YOU! The third person of the Holy Trinity - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit!
So don't live a defeated life! You are a child of the living God! You have the Spirit within you. You are meant for God's glory! Jesus is real! So claim it and live it!
If you are not a believer, then click on the "Jesus 2020" at the right to see how you can claim Jesus as your Savior and Lord. Then tell someone! (Email me or contact the church if you'd like to learn more about becoming a Christian.)

New Blog Series: Training Up A Child
Listen, you don't need a degree in theology or be a Biblical expert to teach your child about God's love. Teach them what you do know. Look for teachable moments, situations that arise that give opportunity to share what you know about God. Take your children to church on Sundays and Wednesdays. Keep seeking God yourself, reading your Bible, praying, worshipping, and going to church. When you do, you are leading and teaching your child by example. YOU are the best teacher your child could ever have. Why? You have their best interests at heart. You love them more than anyone else, next to God.
The church is there to reinforce, support, and help parents in this endeavor. The church only has 1 maybe 2 hours a week with children. That isn't much time for us to have a spiritual impact on the children. Therefore, it is ultimately we parents who must ensure the spiritual upbringing of our children. The consequences are eternal. So, to help parents bring up their children in the Lord, we are going to explore some of the following topics in this series of blogs:
- Raising Godly Children in an Ungodly World
- The Importance of Parent Involvement
- Leading Children to Christ
- The Importance of Prayer
- Developing a Daily Walk with God
- Prayer Journals
- Modeling the Christian Walk for Your Child
- Discipline Means Discipleship
I may be a little ambitious, but these are just some of the topics I hope to cover. Please email me with ideas, experiences, or questions you'd like to share. Our goal is to pass along information to help parents grow their children spiritually. We are also available at church to speak with your child one-on-one about becoming a Christian. My heart is with you! I am praying for you and your precious children!
